Purpose Records is an independent record label with offices based in Brooklyn , New York and Newark , New Jersey Founded in 2001 by George Littlejohn and Russell Johnson, the initial goal for Purpose was to provide an outlet for quality adult soul orientated music.

However, Purpose has actually evolved into a label that showcases the full spectrum and the diversity of soul music. From the self-contained truly beyond category soulful house band TORTURED SOUL to the quadruple threat, singer, songwriter, producer & multi-instrumentalist ANGELA JOHNSON, to singer/songwriter/flautist MONET, to R&B, dance, modern funk band COOLY’s HOT BOX, to keyboardist, producer/remixer TICKLAH, to our newest addition the incredibly diverse TRICIA ANGUS.

Purpose has also been instrumental in creating increased communication and networking among Soul Music writers, artist, producers and radio people around the world. Our strong philosophy is that independent businesses need to be supportive of other each in order to grow. That means indie artists supporting indie stores and spreading the word about the online radio entities and college radio that play their material. That means indie stores allowing the indie artists to have in-stores and providing in-store play. It also means artists, producers, mangers, labels, writers all spreading the word about all this undiscovered talent.

Purpose recording artists have been recognized by the television world. Tortured Soul’s “Fall in Love” was featured in the SHOWTIME series “HUFF” (Hank Azaria). Angela Johnson’s “No Better Love” has been featured on FX’s “THE SHIELD,” (Michael Chiklis) as well as UPN’s “KEVIN HILL.” (Taye Diggs). Her song “Sad Days” has been licensed by The WB’s “Roswell.” Monet’s “Joy” and “Stand” were also featured on KEVIN HILL, “Stand” again was featured on “ROSWELL” and “Vibacious” on the WEATHER CHANNEL. In April 2005 SBC Global.net (AT&T/Cingular) launched a National Television Ad campaign for their DSL service that features Cooly’s hot-box as the centerpiece of the commercial, complete with visual clips of the band performing the song “Lose Your Friends.”
