Cooly's Hotbox
Cooly's Hotbox was born in a small liberal arts college named S.U.N.Y.
(state university of NY) at purchase, about 30 minutes north of nyc in
1992. John Christian Urich, (aka Cooly) the Founder Drummer/singer and
principal songwriter of Cooly's Hotbox wanted to put together an R+B
project that would reflect a 70's sentiment based on strong songwriting
and live musicianship. He met Angela Johnson and his dream began to come
true. Angela, a multi talented instrumentalist and vocalist, and now a
well recognized producer and songwriter, met Christian when they were
singing together in the Gospel choir in college. The most recent Cooly's
Hotbox album, "DON'T BE AFRAID GET ON" (purpose records) is one of
their best works to date including songs that have grabbed the publics
attention, nationally and internationally. "Lose your friends" is the
centerpiece in an sbcglobal.net commercial complete with visual clips
of the band. "Maybe I" has been featured on "The KevinHill Show" and
has been in regular rotation on Rafe Gomez's groove boutique, a program
on cd 101.9s newly formatted internet radiostation" new york chill"
"Are we lovers" has been in regular rotation for weeks on jazz FM in
the UK. In addition the cuts "After life" ,"get on" , "don't be
afraid", and "touch my body", have been getting major club play since
the release of the album, by respected Djs around the world. The
History of Cooly's Hotbox is known to numerous fans who have supported
their shows and requested their sound on the dance floor for many
years. Backed by Christian's songwriting and his and Angela's powerful
live performances, in 1994 Cooly's Hotbox were quickly recognized as
heavyweight contenders and signed a deal with Payday/London/PolyGram
Records. Their first release "Don't Throw My Love Around" was included
on the 1994 Giant Step compilation followed by a number of singles in
the late 90's on Sole Records including "We Don't Have to be Alone" and
"Could You Love Me." Cooly's performed in major clubs around New York
and toured the U.S., the U.K. and Japan before releasing their 2002
debut full-length album "Take It" on Dome Records in the U.K. and Higher
Octave Records in the U.S. "Don't be afraid, get on" released in the US
the UK and Japan, Features more of both Christian and Angela's songs,
productions, collaborations, Lead vocal performances, two co-writes
with bassist Justin Wallace, and a co-write with singer/songwriter
